The Kobolds would have dominion over the regions surrounding their sacred mountain of U'Ghoromo on the north side of the island, while the Lominsan would stay on the southern coastal plains of La Noscea. When the pirates established the city of Limsa Lominsa, the Kobolds were originally hostile to them, leading to a number of wars and skirmishes until the two people sealed a pact dividing Vylbrand between them. Indigenous of the island of Vylbrand, the Kobold is a relatively intelligent race with a proficiency in the arts of Smithing and Alchemy, two activities that led to the breeding and domestication of Fire Bombs to harness their power. They have a local tradition known as "the cracking of the coinpurse," in which new arrivals to Mord Souq gain admittance by spending money at one of the local merchants, and believe that "there is no such thing as a thing no one needs." The Flood of Light that ravaged the First gave them more opportunities for prosperity with treasures from the fallen nation of Nabaath Araeng. Due to not being driven to desperation like the Kobolds, the Mord are generally friendly and pride themselves on being fair and honest merchants, save for a few unsavory individuals. Unlike their Source counterparts, they expose their faces, showing beady red eyes and rounded teeth. In the First, the Kobolds are known as the Mord, a mercantile race of beastmen that live in Mord Souq in Amh Araeng. Despite a treaty that settled territory disputes, the aftermath of the Calamity has spurred increasing disputes over resources. Their claim over the wealth of the land on Vylbrand led to recurring conflict with the city-state of Limsa Lominsa. As of the events of the Umbral Calamity, the least order is the 789th, who are characterized as being craven and timid. Kobold society is a hierarchical meritocracy, with groups divided into numbered orders based on how industrious and productive they are, with the lower the number the greater in rank. They possess considerable knowledge of metalworking and alchemy, even cultivating Bombs. Kobolds have a pious devotion to the wealth of the earth, which they regard as gifts from their "father" Titan. Their speech often exhibits the repetition of a key word in a sentence to bookend two synonyms for the same word. True to their patron primal, Kobolds frequently employ earth magicks. They usually wear helmets and body armor. Kobolds are squat in form, and their hunched stature gives the illusion they are quadrupedal, but a closer look shows they exhibit bipedal motion.
